Brazoria County is home to popular strong conservative State Representatives Ed Thompson and Speaker of the Texas House Dennis Bonnen. Social Media in the last two weeks has been hit with a Tsunami of Anti-Bonnen groups promising to challenge Speaker Bonnen in the Brazoria County Republican Party Primary. They even promise to eventually unseat the Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives. Some of these groups are secret closed groups, one is public. The Facebook organization Boot Bonnen is a public group whose self-created description is shown below.
Boot Bonnen has 431 members who all seem ready to organize, contribute, and volunteer towards the defeat of Dennis Bonnen in the 2020 Brazoria County Republican Party Primary. Bonnen has already drawn one primary challenger Ronda Seth. The Anti-Bonnen Facebook groups that MPN was able to view had members stating they were ready to support Seth by default if no other challenger against the Texas House Speaker Emegered. Seth’s newly formed Facebook Page already has over 800 supporters who’ve liked the page.
Some of the Anti-Bonnen Facebook Groups and Pages are secret and invitation only. MPN loyal readers were able to send us a screenshot of one of these secret groups descriptions shown below:
So why exactly do organizations and their members want to unseat the current Speaker of the House Dennis Bonnen? One member stated, “Every time a real republican stood up idiot Bonnen slapped them down! Bonnen is the problem and he’s gotta go!!”
Another huge problem anti-Bonnen factions claim is Bonnen’s response to a question about a hypothetical Democratic Party takeover of the Texas House of Representatives. Bonnen stated about the House flipping to Dem Control, “I think Texas would be very blessed if there was a Democrat majority and Joe Moody wanted to lead the House.” Moody who Bonnen claimed Texas would be blessed to have as the Democratic Speaker of the House supported sanctuary cities and claimed the Bonnen himself and the Texas GOP were “Racist.”
The Anti-Bonnen forces classify Bonnen as weak on pro-life issues citing Bonnen’s statement on pro-lifers, “If we passed every pro-life bill filed in the history of the state, they would say we had not done enough. You will never please or appease those folks and I’m sure as hell not going to waste my time trying.” Bonnen’s claiming that he wouldn’t waste his time trying to make prolifers happy came as fighting words to the anti-Bonnen forces. The Anti-Bonnen groups also claim he is weak on the second amendment.
One member shared a Resolution that could eventually be sent to the 2020 Republican Party of Texas State Convention from the Smith County Republican party calling for the Censure of Speaker Bonnen. The groups event asked Texans to sign a petition to censure and remove the speaker.

Personally, the author of this article thinks Speaker Bonnen did an amazing job in this last legislative session and would vote for Bonnen. However, it is obvious that there is growing anti-Bonnen sentiment in the county that is growing on social media among the die-hard conservatives of our county. Will this sentiment and growing criticism of the speaker cost him the 2020 nomination of the Republican Party for Texas House District 25? Only time will tell…
