First supermoon of the decade will be visible this weekend

Not all moons are created equal…full moons are fun to look at, but ‘supermoons’ are even more special because they appear bigger and brighter than a typical full moon.`

The first of four supermoons will rise this weekend, this will also occur in March, April, and May.

A supermoon happens when the moon’s orbit is closest to earth at the same time it’s full.  According to NASA, the moon’s distance from the Earth changes throughout its orbit. At its furthest, the moon is 253,000 miles away from the Earth. At its closes, the moon is 226,000 miles away.

The moon will appear full most of the weekend but will be at its fullest Sunday, Feb 9 at 2:33 a.m. ET.

Sunday’s full moon also marks the Chinese lunar new year. In the Chinese zodiac, 2020 marks the year of the rat.
