Film Made by Local Young People Debuts on Netflix

Feature Film Rich Kids (sometimes stylized as Rich Kid$) was filmed in Houston, Texas and released in 2018. Written and Directed by female director Laura Somers, the film tells the story of lower-income youth who are the children of immigrants in Houston, Texas. Struggling with the realities of poverty the youth break into a local Mansion (they call “los ricos” house) whose owners never seem to be home. Once squatting in the home the youth live out a weekend fantasy that they exist among the city’s upper crust.

Today, twitter and social media exploded with the news that this film received global release via the streaming platform Netflix.  Many saw it as a triumph for Houston made films, women-directed films, Latin-American film, and motion pictures made by young people.
